Proposal to Launch the First Keyper Set for Shutter DAO 0x36

The Shutter DAO 0x36’s core purpose is to select and manage the Keyper Set. There is already a selected Keyper set on-chain, however, there are many new applications that need to be evaluated. In addition, the previous Keypers still need to be confirmed by the 0x36 DAO. With the staking contracts completed, it is now time for the DAO to confirm the previous Keyper set, and for the DAO to evaluate all new applications so that 0x36 can formally codify the Shutter Keyper set onchain.

Shutter DAO 0x36 will now start accepting new applications from all entities interested in becoming a Keyper, a crucial role in maintaining the security and decentralization of the Shutter protocol. Anyone passionate about decentralized networks, blockchain technology, and helping to secure the Shutterized Gnosis Chain, could now get involved!

What Is a Keyper?

Keypers are essential to the Shutter protocol because they generate and manage encryption and decryption keys that secure network transactions. Keypers also support credible neutrality on the Shutterized Gnosis Chain and potentially other chains that integrate Shutter’s threshold encryption technology. This is a unique opportunity to contribute to the decentralization and security of a protocol that sets new standards for blockchain neutrality and fairness.

The Shutter Protocol Integrations

The Shutter protocol is currently most notably integrated with the Shutterized Gnosis Chain, which has become a blueprint for decentralized, credibly neutral blockchains. With over 300,000 validators and low transaction fees, Gnosis Chain provides the perfect environment for Shutter’s encrypted mempool technology.

By becoming a Keyper, you will help uphold the Gnosis Chain’s commitment to base layer neutrality and promote trust and fairness within the entire ecosystem.

Shielded Voting ensures integrity and prevents manipulation of your votes. Shielded Voting functionality is available to all decentralized organizations on Snapshot. It has been adopted by more than 630 DAOs and protected over 298,000 votes.

How to Apply

If you’re interested in joining the Keyper set elected by the Shutter DAO 0x36, we encourage you to apply as soon as possible!

The application deadline is proposed to be November 3, 2024.

To submit your application, follow these steps:

  1. Post a proposal in the Keyper Application category on the Shutter forum.
  2. Use the following template for your proposal:
    1. I wish to become a Keyper for the Shutter protocol.
    2. Name/alias:
    3. Email:
    4. Ethereum Address used to run the Keyper node:
    5. Why are you interested in becoming a Keyper?
  3. Your application will be reviewed and included in the upcoming vote, where the Shutter DAO 0x36 members will determine the first set of Keypers.

Previous Keyper Applications

This proposal will determine a completely new Keyper set, managed by Shutter DAO 0x36. For that reason, previous applications must actively indicate their wish to be reconfirmed into this new, 0x36 controlled Keyper set.

Everyone who wishes to be a part of the first Shutter DAO 0x36 Keyper set needs to apply. If you were a part of either the first or second Keyper set votes by the Shutter protoDAO, you can either reply and update your existing application or post a completely new application.

Also, those who submitted their applications after the first two Keyper votes need to actively indicate their desire to participate in this vote by updating or posting a new application.

System Requirements

To ensure the security and continuous operation of the Shutter protocol, Keypers are required to maintain high availability and meet the following system requirements:

  • 1 CPU core
  • 2 GB RAM
  • 50 GB disk space
  • Permanent, stable internet connection (no residential DSL or cable connections)

While the computational requirements are low, your node must be online as much as possible. The network requires a threshold of Keypers to operate correctly, so we strongly recommend using a monitoring system to ensure consistent availability.

Become Part of a Decentralized Future

With more integrations on the horizon and the growing importance of encrypted transactions in DeFi, this is a pivotal moment to join the Shutter Network.
Don’t miss the opportunity to join this groundbreaking initiative! Submit your application by November 3, 2024, and become an essential part of the Shutter DAO 0x36 community.

That’s a hard ask running a home node. So a keyper should be running it in a cloud environment and not using a home nome?

This is probably dependent on what part of the world you’re in. There are certainly locations where cable or residential connections are sufficient, but others where it’s not.

If you are able to keep a validator online and synced (without outages), your connection is sufficient.
If you aren’t certain of that, I would suggest trying that for a significant period of time before applying to be Keyper. The smaller size of the Keyper set means any node outages are burdensome, so it’s really important the first Keypers are extremely confident in their connection.
