Proposal: Represent ShutterDAO 0x36 @ BerlinBlockChainWeek

Title

Requesting resources to organize an event representing ShutterDao 0x36 during the Berlin Blockchain week.

Goals

  • Provide physical meetup opportunity for Shutter DAO 0x36 members and supporters.

  • Increase visibility and awareness of Shutter DAO 0x36.

  • Attract talented builders to contribute to RFPs (EthBerlin especially is traditionally heavily builder-focused).

Proposal

This proposal aims to host a Shutter DAO community meetup during the Berlin blockchain week (May 18-27), specifically on the evening of May 21, ****after the opening day of DAPPCON, featuring impromptu talks and facilitating future cooperation between members.

With two critical RFPs open, the immediate attraction of builders is essential. Their expertise is crucial for the timely and innovative development of these projects, directly impacting the progress and success of Shutter DAO 0x36.

There will likely be a shutterised gnosis chain workshop at dappcon, providing further synergy effects for such an event.

We would like to present the following options to the DAO:

Voting Options

Option 1

Requested Budget:

  • 15k USDC

  • 25k SHU (Organizer’s remuneration)

An event at a nice, fully-managed venue (i.e. catering, music, etc. provided) accommodating 50-80 people, including talks and panel by members and providing enhanced networking opportunities.

Provides an option for a competition community event with a giveaway.

This option also includes two tickets for DappCon itself for two organizers and some additional merch to be given out to advertise for Shutter DAO 0x36 (Stickers/Patches) at Dappcon.

Duration: Entire evening

Option 2

Requested budget:

  • 5k USDC

  • 25k SHU (Organizer’s remuneration)

Lower footprint event at a small bar (20-30 people) with complementary drinks (minimum consumption coverage) and an agenda including impromptu talks and a small panel.

Duration: ~1-2h

Motivation

With the growing interest and involvement in Shutter DAO, a community event during ETHBerlin presents an ideal opportunity to strengthen connections within the community, share insights from different perspectives (e.g., keypers, core developers), and increase awareness and engagement through educational and networking activities.

Budget items and organizer remuneration

The exact cost of the items are not yet fixed, however the items to be budgeted for are roughly:

  • venue

  • catering

  • swag

  • organizer team compensation

The exact allocation of the granted budget will be delivered for transparency once settled. Out of the grant, depending on the time invested, a maximum of 2.5k USDC and fixed sum of 25k SHU will be allocated for remuneration of the organizers and contributors. The remaining balance will be reimbursed to the DAO.

The organizer team

We are a group of motivated Keypers and Shutter DAO 0x36 contributors, who already started sketching out some plans on the type of event and contacted some potential venues for the occasion.

About me: I was co-organizer for Swag of EthBerlinZwei and EthBerlinÂł and have volunteered for ProtocolBerg 2023. Having followed Shutter since the beginning, I have a good relation to the core team. I have been living in Berlin for 5 years and know several viable locations for an event of this type. My project-based work has put me on the bench for a few weeks, which allows me to take the lead on organizing this event.

Expected outcomes

  • Strengthened community engagement.

  • Increased interest in Shutter DAO 0x36 RFPs from qualified builders with experience in the space.

hey @Chungus , I fully support this; if you need any help on this, hit me up.

I would personally be in support of either, but especially of Option 1.

Sounds like the option 2 is a better choice given Shutter’s at relative early stage and treasury should optimize for development but of course, I have no idea of local cost of running a meetup.

I will be around Berlin as well. Happy to help (If I could actually help anything : ))

In favor of both. But I did actually think that making an event with full catering etc would be less than 15k in Berlin. I would recommend doing something in between capped at a maximum of 10k usdc, and make it more casual than option 1. At least maximum 2 talks and a panel discussion. People usually prefer the mingling and networking at these type of events.

The middle-of-the-road-solution you are pointing out makes sense, considering Berlin’s price level. Option 1 allows us to plan for a very nice event, enables us to attend and leverage DappCon for added marketing, enables additional gimmicks such as merch, and gives us more leeway in negotiations. We are facing some challenges due to the late booking of event spaces (which might also end up working in our favor) so the requested amount does include a buffer. Just to note again for visibility, any remaining balance after expenses will be returned to the DAO and I am very aware that each USDC spent that brings us closer to the granted amount for either option requires additional justification from my side.

@Loring, @tatu, are we having the Shutter team in Berlin this year? What are the plans from your side!

I think this is a great initiative/proposal, and I strongly support it. Personally, I am in favor of option 2, given that there are a few more events upcoming (e.g., EthCC in Brussels), and the DAO should consider allocating a budget for these events as well.

At Kleros Labs, we believe ShutterDAO should continue to build on its strengths, one of which is the synergy with the Gnosis Chain ecosystem. We do think it makes sense for ShutterDAO to host a physical event at DappCon that will allow its community to meet in person and create strong bonds.

Both options seem correct in terms of the pricing range (here is a benchmark for crypto events from another, 1inchDAO, for instance: Snapshot). As ShutterDAO was launched recently, we believe it is the right time to invest in such events that could bring a lot of value, new ideas, and synergies. Thanks, @Chungus, for this initiative!

I think options 1 and 2 serve different purposes. Event 1 has the potential to attract people that are maybe less familiar with the ShutterDAO and technology - an inbound marketing event. Event 2, because of its size, needs to be focused on either existing community members (with the objective of increasing the synergy between them) or a select group of targets that we want to bring into the ecosystem / sell the tech.

In either case, it only makes sense to make an event if there is a Brainbot member or someone with clear decision-making capacity / BD / pitching ability / inbound marketing experience. It’s nice and well to share drinks with frens, but for spending budget we should get at least a list of leads for potential integrations and partnerships.

This is key here!

If so, because of the stage where we are at, I’d vote for option 1 or if @czepluch can get us the package for 10k instead of 15 even better :stuck_out_tongue:

Great discussion.

@Chungus - Thanks for leading on this. If this proposal passes will you please come back to this thread and post about the results as part of the deliverable for the organizer’s renumeration?

Hey @Chungus - just a friendly reminder to post something here about the how the event went, so that we can close out the thread with the full story. Maybe pics or attendance or anything else relevant.

Hey, Thank you for the reminder, sorry I did not get around to it yet.

To summarize the evening:

  • From the two options presented to the DAO, the lower-budget option was chosen which turned out to have been the correct choice. The time was simply too short to have organized much more than we already did.
  • The event turned out to be a nice meetup for shutterFriends and partners to exchange, not a dedicated marketing opportunity. We had a speaker ready to seize an opportunity to present a talk but conversation was already in full swing throughout the evening and would have been negatively disrupted.
  • For privacy, I will create a private fileshare for the pictures. I have some, but I was also quite busy during the height of the event and would be grateful for contributions. Hit me up on telegram @cklbe and send pictures or write in here and I can provide the credentials.
  • Orga summary:
    • Once the grant came through, we contacted possible locations and got lucky with a beautiful rooftop venue in a central location next to the SafeCon venue. We also tried to make the date convenient for as many shutterFriends and partners as possible.
    • Cool side note: Through my GnosisPay account, I was able to convert the grant directly into payments for the event, including a bank account transfer through GnosisPay’s Monerium partnership.
    • Caterer options fell through a little bit (too expensive, too inconvenient, etc.) so I opted to “cater” myself with a service personnel provided by the venue. I had drinks delivered by Flaschenpost. Leftovers were gratefully accepted as donations by an attendee from Chainflip as their offices are right across the street.
    • In parallel, we started organizing the sign-up procedure in Sheets, Luma, and the BBW24 calendar and received around 70 sign-ups with options for additional attendance. I never counted attendance but suspect that we were around 50-60 in total over the course of two hours.
  • Budget Summary (For anyone interested, I’ll be happy to provide the notion with detailed cost items and invoices), but here is the high-level overview:
    • 4600Eur received (5000 USDC)
    • ~2400Eur for location
    • ~600Eur in drinks & finger food
    • ~100Eur in Swag (Shutterized beer coasters  )
    • ~1200Eur (+25k SHU fixed from the grant) in remuneration for the organizer team
    • 300Eur (325USDC) to be returned to the DAO.

Hi, can you please also post the transaction details for the funds that were returned to the DAO?

And great to hear that the event went well!

Hi Tatu, My bad, I was initially waiting to see if any additional expenses come up from the venue, and then frankly forgot, but just executed the transaction. Here is the txHash: Ethereum Transaction Hash (Txhash) Details | Etherscan.

Ended up paying back ~100USDC more to the DAO than previously calculated as a member declined their share.
