Grant Proposal to execute technical roadmaps for Gnosis Chain Integration, OP Stack Development, and Espresso Collaboration | brainbot GmbH

Provide a grant to brainbot gmbh to develop open source software and protocols in the context of the Shutter technical roadmap.

Proposal

Provide a grant to brainbot gmbh for:

  • 600,000 (six hundred thousand) USDC, and
  • 200,000 (two hundred thousand) SHU.

This grant will allow brainbot gmbh to:

  • Grow the team dedicated to Shutter at brainbot gmbh from ~9 FTE to ~11 FTE;
  • Develop open source software and protocols freely available to anyone in the context of the Shutter technical roadmap (see next section);
  • Parallelize more Shutter integrations; and
  • Provide more thorough technical support and maintenance.

Planned Roadmap

Gnosis Chain Integration

  • Testnet Launch: Complete integration and testing on Gnosis Chain testnet (April 2024).
  • Mainnet Launch: Deploy the Shutter-specific components for Shutterized Gnosis Chain integration in a mainnet-ready state in Q2 2024.

OP Stack Integrations

  • Testnet Development and Launch: Develop and deploy Shutter protocol as its own OP Stack testnet in early Q2 2024.
  • Mainnet Development and Launch: Complete development for a mainnet-ready release in late Q2 2024.

Espresso Collaboration

  • Integration Development: Develop integration solution with Espresso in Q2 2024.
  • Deployment and Testing: Complete deployment and commence integration testing in Q3 2024.

Continued integration work and support for Shielded Voting

  • Support and maintenance for Shielded Voting on Snapshot
  • Future Shielded Voting integrations with Kleros and Fractal

Motivation

brainbot gmbh is the original team of developers of the Shutter software stack, and it has played a pivotal role in nurturing and shaping the protocol from its inception. We started Shutter with a vision to make blockhains more secure, equitable and decentralized by tackling some of their most pressing challenges: MEV, censorship, and transaction privacy.

Shutter has recently achieved incredible traction within the community and among key collaborators across the ecosystem, including:

  • The successful creation of Shutter DAO 0x36 by the community,
  • Strategic partnerships, and
  • Technical milestones already achieved

These accomplishments speak volumes about Shutters value proposition and its potential to revolutionize the way transactions and governance are managed on blockchain networks.

In proposing this grant, brainbot gmbh is seeking to continue contributing to specific technical milestones and to reaffirm its long-term commitment to the Shutter ecosystem. We believe in Shutter’s mission now more than ever, and we are dedicated to ensuring its success. We ask the community to support our technical integration efforts and help maintain our momentum.

By implementing the integration of the Shutter stack with Gnosis Chain and OP Stack, as well as the collaboration with Espresso, we aim to accelerate the adoption of encrypted mempools and threshold encryption technology. These steps are crucial for enhancing transaction security, reducing MEV exploitation, and promoting a fairer and more transparent blockchain environment.

brainbot gmbh’s continued support for Shutter through this proposal is a testament to our belief in the importance of privacy, security, and fairness in the blockchain space. We are excited to contribute to the next phase of Shutter’s evolution, ensuring it remains at the forefront of addressing the challenges and seizing the opportunities within the ever-evolving blockchain landscape.

The software and protocol enhancements funded by this grant are likely to attract more users by advancing protection against MEV exploitation and improving transaction privacy. A fast pace of integration will send a positive signal to other platforms and will increase the likelihood that the Shutter protocol will be integrated as well. New collaborations and integrations could lead to potential fee income for the Shutter 0x36 DAO by providing front-running protection services.

Open-source development ensures transparency and fosters community contributions, making Shutter DAO 0x36 an appealing candidate for adoption by other platforms. By positioning itself as a key player in securing transaction mempools, Shutter DAO 0x36 can play a pivotal role in promoting a more decentralized and equitable blockchain environment.

Grant Disbursement Schedule

Shutter DAO 0x36 will disburse 600,000 USDC to brainbot gmbh upon approval of this proposal.

Shutter DAO 0x36 will disburse 200,000 SHU (100% locked until 1 April 2025) to brainbot gmbh upon approval of this proposal.

This is a great proposal.

By all available evidence the brainbot team has done an exemplary job with the Shutter software stack and should absolutely continue to be funded to maintain momentum and continue to grow the stack. I assume the lack of questions and comments on this post is because it’s such an obvious “yes”.

The only question I’d offer would be: Is there a general sense of how long this funding is expected to last for these new initiatives? Just to set expectations, is this a 3 month, 6 month, 12 month, etc. estimate of need?

Brainbot plays an important role in initiating the Shutter Network. Much of the essential knowledge for maintaining the codebase likely still resides with Brainbot’s developers. Their continued contribution to developing the roadmap is good news.

I support this proposal but have a similar question regarding the anticipated duration of work that this grant will cover.

I would suggest also to consider using the DAO passed RFC process (even though probably only brainbot can do this work right now)

Proposal looks good, awesome to see movement on the dev side. Agree with @5pence about providing a target timeline, also a breakdown of how you got to 600k USDC would be useful and why you need SHU tokens for this?

@han - I agree with the thought, and also that the competency that brainbot already has in the stack is unmatched. It would be really difficult for that to be properly demonstrated in an open RFP on the forum.

I’d say, let’s not lose momentum - For this ask it’s better to defer to their judgement on what they need to keep up the speed. There might also be other things the DAO doesn’t have context on such as retention or reward structure.

We can, and should, iterate on these models and processes in real time - but at this stage there’s likely no need to slow anything down to over-examine it. Brainbot’s intentions are clear.

We should get this passed, and in parallel we can discuss what the best process for funding like this in the future.
A stream could be a good approach, or perhaps regularly scheduled grants that help with expectations.

I think providing brainbot some SHU is a good idea, as it makes sure they share more upside on Shutter’s progress and also has a kind of skin-in-game, therefore it aligns the interest.

it is in the best interests of the DAO to keep the engagement of the OG development team and implement the proposed roadmap as long as it brings net positive impact for the DAO.

Daoplomats are voting Yes.

At Kleros Labs, we will support this proposal. As highlighted by other delegates, Brainbot is a key partner for the development of Shutter Network. It definitely makes sense that we proceed with this funding. The amount requested, considering the number of FTEs, appears reasonable. Moreover, if possible, implementing this through a streaming payment method would be perfect.

Additionally, the condition that some SHU tokens are locked until April 2025 serves as an excellent incentive for long-term engagement in the project.
